Was sorry yo have missed him but would like him to come to the house when he is in town again. Would like to have some poems of his. Is grateful that he agreed to do the moemoranda in his series of the Markhm books. Says that Makham should do his utmoste to help Russia get her freedom.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
